Overview
National broadcasters operate critical digital infrastructure that extends far beyond traditional television and radio. Modern broadcasting organizations maintain extensive web platforms for streaming, news delivery, archive access, and audience engagement—all requiring robust application delivery and security infrastructure.[1]
This national broadcasting corporation serves millions of viewers and operates numerous web-facing services. Like many organizations, they had consolidated load balancing and security capabilities on a single ADC platform—in this case, hardware from a major vendor. The goal was unified management and reduced complexity.
However, the reality fell short of expectations. While the legacy platform technically supported both load balancing and WAF capabilities, hardware resource constraints meant a critical trade-off: the institution could run load balancing OR activate WAF protection, but not both at the performance levels required for production traffic.[2]
The Challenge
The infrastructure limitation created a significant security gap:
Hardware Resource Limitations
The legacy ADC platform couldn't handle both load balancing and WAF processing simultaneously at production traffic levels. Enabling WAF caused unacceptable performance degradation.
WAF Functionality Disabled
Despite having WAF capability in the product license, the institution was forced to leave it disabled. Web applications remained unprotected against OWASP Top 10 threats and other application-layer attacks.
Security vs. Performance Trade-off
The organization faced an impossible choice: accept security risk by leaving WAF disabled, or accept performance risk by enabling it. Neither option was acceptable for a national broadcaster.
The Solution
A comprehensive proof-of-concept validated TR7's ability to deliver unified capabilities:
Full-Service PoC
All production services were migrated to TR7 during the proof-of-concept phase. This wasn't a limited test—it validated TR7's ability to handle the broadcaster's complete workload.
Resource-Efficient Architecture
TR7's architecture delivers both load balancing and WAF capabilities without the resource constraints that plagued the legacy platform. No trade-offs between security and performance.
Full WAF Activation
For the first time, the institution could enable comprehensive WAF protection across all web applications—addressing the security gap that had existed since the original deployment.
Unified Platform
Single platform for load balancing and WAF eliminates the complexity of managing separate solutions while ensuring both capabilities operate at full effectiveness.
Results
The migration resolved the long-standing security gap:
Full WAF functionality enabled for all web applications
LB and WAF operating simultaneously without constraints
All services successfully running through TR7
Applications protected against application-layer threats
Broadcasters Under Attack
Media organizations are increasingly targeted by cyber attacks. According to industry reports, broadcasting and media companies face rising threats including DDoS attacks during major events, content manipulation attempts, and web application attacks targeting viewer-facing platforms. WAF protection isn't optional—it's essential infrastructure for modern broadcasters.
